Healthy Hot Chocolate ~ The Luminous Kichen

I woke up this morning to the sound of the rain pitter pattering on our roof and a slight chill in the air. Winter is coming…even to the Gold Coast.

What better way to celebrate the first signs of winter than with a big mug of steaming hot chocolate?

Now I know I don’t have to tell you about the ingredients that go into most of the commercial hot chocolate powders out there because you have read my post on how to read food labels and are now a qualified food detective, but it’s true most of them are filled with additives and weird chemicals which is so unnecessary because let me tell you, what I am sipping on right now tastes better than any commercial hot chocolate I have ever had. It’s creamy, chocolaty and not too sickly sweet.

Why is it healthy?

Because it’s made with raw cacao powder and maca powder.

Cacao is super high in antioxidants and rich in minerals and maca powder is rich in amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

The maca powder makes it nice and creamy and the maple syrup is a delicious natural sweetener. If you don’t have maca powder, don’t fret it’s still lovely without it – I am just always looking for ways to get more goodness in.

..and don’t worry, raw cacao powder isn’t as bitter as the processed cocoa powders we used to use in baking.

  2. Pour in boiling water until the mug is ¾ full and stir until both the cacao and maca are well dissolved
  3. Add the almond milk and maple syrup
